Conversations at the Fowler Museum
Community, I’ve been presented with a wonderful opportunity to lead a discussion & workshop this Saturday, May 4th, at one of my favorite museums, The Fowler Museum @fowlermuseum at UCLA. This session is in conjunction with artist, abolitionist, Patrisse Cullors @osopepatrisse and her incredible exhibition, The House Was Too Small: Yoruba Sacred Arts from Africa and Beyond.
In this workshop I will be discussing how bodies of water are containers for spirit. The discussion will be an extension of a previous project I did in 2021, ”Celestial Light: Finding Our Way Home.
We will explore how we “house”, contain Spirit. The divine, our body, the land and vessels, like pots they are all containers that help us maintain and persevere our tradition and traditional ways and are in support of our physical and mental health. The sacredness of water. Ekoko, the sacred Clay Pot. The sacred body. bodies of water; the river, lakes and sea are containers of spirit from a traditional and diasporic lens of Ifa. Focusing on the maternal, the healer, the earth, the water, the womb, the Ori, the Stars, our Egbe, our mental & spiritual health.
There will also be a craft-making workshop with clay to mold small pots to create containers to hold, to “house” spirit. And bridge an understanding of our connection and responsibility to our wellness as it pertains to the earth despite our ever changing and challenging pathways due to migration, displacement, and gentrification.
